LONDON 2012, OLYMPIC GAMES

The Olympic Games is the biggest sporting event on the planet. The Summer Olympic Games are currently held every four years.
As we all know, Madrid was in the final list to organize the Olympic Games along with London, Moscow, New York, and Paris. Madrid was almost chosen but in the end it was not possible. On the 6th of July 2005, London won the right to host the 2012 Games.
With that, the 2012 Summer Olympic Games will take place in London, England from the 27th of July to the 12th of August 2012. Moreover, the 2012 summer Olympic Games will make London the first city to have hosted the modern games three times.
Athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees are expected to participate in the Games; however up to now, only 185 countries out of the 204 have qualified at least one athlete.
The 2012 Summer Olympic program features 26 sports and a total of 39 disciplines. For the first time, women's boxing is included in the program, but baseball and softball were dropped from the 2008 program.
Currently Spain has qualified athletes in 21 sports and in a total of 28 disciplines. Let’s hope we will win a lot of medals!
There are many curiosities around the games; we are going to see some of them such as its logo, its mascots and its medals.

The Logo.
The logo is a representation of the number 2012. We can appreciate that the Olympic rings are inside the number zero.

Mascots.
There are two official mascots for the 2012 Summer Olympic. Their names are Wenlock and Mandeville. It is not clear which one is Wenlock and which one is Mandeville, but they seem to be really nice!

 Medals.
A total of around 4,700 medals for the Olympic and Paralympic Games have been produced. We can see the front and the back sides of the 2012 Summer Olympics gold medal in the picture below. Hopefully, Spain will get a lot of them.

We have seen some curiosities about the games but there is still much more to see. Everyone is looking forward to the upcoming London Olympic Games this year, which is going to be huge!
And…even though we are sad because Madrid didn’t win, we will not give up and will continue to try to host the Olympic Games in Spain. We can safely say that sooner or later we will get it, (maybe in 2020?) who knows…
